I have been looking to find my unique inner voice for most of my life. I remember when I was living in Hollywood trying to find an acting agent. I visited one agency and although I was not signed I was given a great piece of advice by the agent, "David, when you can come back and tell me who you are on and beyond everyone else, we will talk about representation."
I never forgot this valuable advice. As a writer, I try to practice my craft daily and attempt to discover what it is that I bring to it that is uniquely me and then concentrate on exploiting that element.
In the past I spent a lot of time trying to imitate something already out there, reinvent something or guess what it is the buyers wanted. I usually just lost myself in the process.
The key is to dig deep inside and find my own unique voice. -- How is this done? I accomplish this by continuing to learn more about who I am... the core me. Meditation, journaling, therapy, exercise, vacationing, whatever… are some tools that help.
